We're not the Francis Bourgeois strain of Rail Fans who geek from the sidelines; we're the Renton and Sick Boy kind that freak it from the inside.

We rode the westbound Texas Eagle train with the kind of characters that inspire cinema, embarking on a multi-day journey across the Wild West of Texas, the Deserts of New Mexico and Arizona, and the Californian farmlands.

Wedged between these vast landscapes, we caught glimpses of life in borderlands and one-horse towns, where liberty exists in isolation, but modernity is only a sculptural art installation away.
