If you spend any time on social media, then you might have noticed an increase in sadface emojis flooding your feed. The #sadboys trend is undeniably gaining momentum, partially due to the recent release of Swedish rapper Yung Lean’s debut mixtape Unknown Death 2002 just last week. A definite standout on the release is the appropriately titled Hurt, credited to a producer called Suicideyear.

At the age of 18, the producer boasts a decent CV for someone whose original intent was to start a line of t-shirts. He released his first, self-titled, mixtape in October 2012, with his follow-up Japan hitting the .coms in May this year. He’s riding steady in The Wavery/SmackDaHoe clique, has produced stacks for other artists (like High Cry for Little Pain) and recently his track Finale featured on Bromance #10 on a digital-turned-tangible vinyl split with Kaytranada (who will be touring Australia next month with Ryan Hemsworth). Not fucking bad for an abandoned t-shirt printing dream. Suicideyear is currently working on a split EP with another sadwave favourite, Karman, and the self-proclaimed ‘roach queen’ Fifty Grand.
